| Customer Reviews: It's not a toy nuh-uh October 2, 2009 Virgelio Carpio (Middletown, NY) 10 out of 10 found this review helpful
Between a $1400 pair of real camera lenses -- a fisheye and a macro (or "closeup") -- and a $30 "screw-on" combined fisheye/macro lens, the decision for me was a no-brainer: I went for the cheap $30 Opteka Semi-Fisheye .35x Macro Lens.
Half the world say it's crap while half say it's great. So in a scale of 0-1400 I slid my expectation to somewhere around 30 which is pretty much zero, ordered the lens, and braced myself for a plastic toy you would expect to find at Toys R Us. I was pretty sure I'd feel embarrassed to take it out of my camera bag when I take group photos of friends.
To my surprise, the thing was heavy and felt good to my hands when it arrived. The glass is clear and the body is all metal finished in black. It even came with a protective pouch and two "step-down" rings to make it fit onto my camera's lens. It didn't look like a toy at all. Screwed on to my Sony A350, it looked like a professional lens extension -- at least to my un-professional eye.
So I took my camera and the $30 screw-on fisheye/macro lens with me and on my way to work took some sample photos. You can see them when you click "See all 5 customer images" on amazon.com's product page.
For those with DSLRs, hopefully the sample photos will help you decide to buy the cheap lens.
For those without DSLRs yet, hopefully these sample photos would make you swing from digicam point-and-shooter to digital SLR photography enthusiast.
For those who already bought $1400 lenses for their DSLRs, tough. Chances are, you're that half of the world who say it's crap. :)
Opteka .35 hd2 fisheye.. great value and versatility September 28, 2009 Jose Rodriguez (caguas, Puerto Rico) 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
I have a alpha 200 and a canon d60 - i have both 55 diameter and 58 diameter lenses... and this product had the necessary adapter ring to adjust and use with both lenses. very nice... how often you can find products with that kind of versatility? i recommend this for beginners or to try let your imagination run!
Fun for Playing around. October 11, 2009 Michael S. Despot (Idaho USA) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I have only used this a few times. I bought a new camera, thus this lens does not fit it. The few times I used it was fun. You can get some very unusual effects with it. The photo is totally round so if you don't like that you can crop it and make it look a bit more normal.
The quality is not bad at all for the price paid and if you like to experimaent with your photos, this can be a lot of fun.
Great Fun! Easy to use! February 4, 2010 Melissa Billups (Cameron Park, CA) I want to upload some pictures if I can. It is fun to use and cheap for a beginner to play with. I love the Macro part. It is really like two lenses in one!
fish eye January 10, 2010 Mark Lilley (CA.) i wanted to play with the fish eye type of pictures so i got one. its a great buy for the money. of course it needed an ancluded addapter ring to go onto my 55mm (my only complaint). the lenz feels heavy and good in hand, and seems to be well constructed. i bought 3 things during the same day this one came second, but still in good time. it has some nice caps on it to protect the lenz, and can have an addapter to put filters infront of it.
