An Acceptable Overview ... But Off On A Few Points October 13, 2008

I love David Jeremiah, so this review is very difficult for me to write, because I find myself having to be critical of his work.

On the positive side, I found his writing style to be quite readable and very easy to follow. The chapter on the Rapture is enjoyable, as are others.

But here's my biggest gripe with this book: some of the "meatier" issues in the book aren't adequately supported by the scholars cited by Dr. Jeremiah. There's a feeling that the author consulted one source, or perhaps two, and went with what he perceived as the "prevailing opinion." But that doesn't always mean it's the CORRECT opinion, which is what really matters in the end.

Case in point: the book contains a chapter regarding the Ezekiel 38/39 "latter days" invasion of Israel by Russia, Iran and other Middle Eastern Muslim nations. It appears that Dr. Jeremiah relied too much on the writings of Dr. John F. Walvoord, who taught that this invasion takes place DURING the Tribulation, not BEFORE it. Both Drs. Walvoord and Jeremiah took this position solely because Israel is said to be dwelling in "peace" at the time of the invasion. Had Dr. Jeremiah considered other scholarly opinions, he most certainly would have taken a different approach, since Jewish AND Christian Hebrew scholars state that "peace" is a mistranslation. In fact, most Hebrew scholars believe "securely" is the best translation. Jewish scholar Rashi writes that these references mean the Israelis are: "dwellers in villages without a wall, who trust in their might and are not so afraid as to gather into fortified cities." (Quoted from Rashi's Commentary on Ezekiel 38) In current day language, this equates to America on September 10, 2001. We trusted in our own might and weren't afraid of any other country. This changed the very next day.

Other scholarly authors, such as Dr. Arthur Fruchtenbaum, have written extensively about why it's impossible for this invasion to occur during the Tribulation ... so one wonders why Dr. Jeremiah didn't do more research before writing his book.

Other than the Ezekiel 38/39 invasion chapter, I found little errors sprinkled around the book, but I'll not go into those here since this isn't the place. So sadly, if someone asked me whether I'd recommend Dr. Jeremiah's book, I could not honestly say yes.

This book by Dr David Jeremiah [one of the best Biblical teachers we have] is a familiar tour through prophecy including Israel's role in the world, oil crisis, evil regimes, coming AntiChrist, America's role in prophecy and other Endtime themes. Jeremiah's teaching style is always fresh and engaging. This is a mainstream evangelical approach with some risks taken along the way [he takes a personal stand on Islamic issue]. A primer for beginners or the curious, a great book for those who love Dr Jeremiah's ministry and a resource book for those seeking current information. David Jeremiah has a rare ability to communicate and engage the listener, and this book is an example. For those looking for more edgy treatment of same, see Epicenter: Why the Current Rumblings in the Middle East Will Change Your Future.

Dr. David Jeremiah's book "What in the World is Going On?" is a guide to events that are ocurring before our eyes. When I got it I could not stop reading it; I red it in 3 nights. (and I'm a slow reader) but the book, is so current, and it is a wonderful guide for the Believer. Dr. Jeremiah exposes current facts with a Biblical perspective in such a way that is so easy to comprenhend, and see the news later on at night, so that we can identify in what times we are living. It is indeed a good investment of your money and time.

Excellent book. A must read for those interested in prophecy and for those searching for an understanding of what is going on in the world today. You will not want to put it down. It is a book that you will definitely want to share with others.
