Product Description No political figure in recent memory has generated the excitment that surrounds Barack Obama. This forty-six-year-old Senator's message of hope has galvanized a generation of new voters and breathed new life into American politics. Once considered a long shot, his inspiring speeches and disarming candor have made him a frontrunner in the 2008 presidential race.
Hopes and Dreams follows Obama's fascinating story beginning with his difficult childhood and struggles coming to terms with his heritage to his remarkable success in school - he was the first black president of teh Harvard Law Review - and his current desire to become leader of the free world. Along the way, readers will meet his friends and family, discover moments that shaped his life, and learn more about the man and his motivations.
Written by a leading journalist and filled with more than 140 photographs, this up-to-the moment biography gives an inside look at one of the most fascinationg figures in politicsm and quite possibly the next President of the United States.

Wonderful book September 6, 2007 bklynsam (Plantation, FL United States) 37 out of 39 found this review helpful
It is more of an outline than a fully fleshed out view of Senator Obama, but very well written. The photos are fantastic, also. I would suggest delving deeper after reading this by purchasing the 'Audacity of Hope', which really shows the depths of this man's knowledge on not only political but social complexities that have shaped his life and helped mold him into one of the most amazing candidates of a generation.
A good intro to Barack Obama. March 1, 2008 Scripture Studier (WI,USA) 29 out of 37 found this review helpful
My first impression of the book was that it would have great photos and little substance. I was correct about the photos, wrong about the rest. "Hopes and Dreams" is an overview of Barack Obama's life covering his childhood as a bi-racial child, his search for information about his father and how that affected him. His decision to pass up a Wall Street career and opting to take a lower-paying job training as a grassroots organizer in Chicago. It also covers his journey through politics and eventual decision to run for president. His mistakes regarding drugs is discussed as well as his middle name. Here are a few quotes from the book: "He is a voice of strength and moderation,an American success story."-John McCain page 46. "We must understand that the might of our military has to be matched by the strength of our diplomacy."-Barack Obama page 107. This book is what I call a "coffee table book". Loaded with photos and enough information to serve as an introduction to Barack Obama. I recommend "Audacity of Hope" also.

How To Play The Race Card August 19, 2008 Smile of Reason (Covington, LA USA) 9 out of 32 found this review helpful
The title to this book should be, "How to Win Voters and Influence the Media by Playing the Race Card". Obama has a sonorous voice and a million dollar smile. He can read from a teleprompter the speeches written by others. But for his expertise in playing the race card, he would still be a lecturer at the University of Chicago Law School. He is a de jure, but not a de facto American. He grew up in Hawaii and Indonesia. He neither knows nor shares American values. In their lust for the presidency, Democrats are willing to overlook these warning signs. Like the German industrialists in the 1930s who believed that they could control Hitler (another charismatic speaker and self-proclaimed messiah), the Democrats believe that they can control Obama. Like the German industrialists, they are wrong. Although Obama is bi-racial, he has chosen to allign himself with the Black Establishment. He will protect their interests at the expense of everyone else. Democratic voters are a lost cause. But independent voters should read this book in conjunction with Obama Nation and The Case Against Barack Obama. Weigh the evidence. Then decide whether whether to vote for him and his wife. Are independent voters willing to assume the risk of electing as President a man who, like Hitler, refuses to articulate the details of the "change" that he promises to bring to America?
