When the Ink goes low frustration goes up February 21, 2010 P. Christensen (San Diego, CA United States) 140 out of 144 found this review helpful
The printer works fine for the most part. Good quality and the wireless network is a really nice feature so you can eliminate cables. I was actually fairly happy with it. The menu systems on the front panel are extremely crude and hard to navigate, but that was really my only gripe.
However, this printer has proven the most irritating design in one respect. When you reach a low ink level, the front control panel is completely frozen giving you a message to "Relace Ink Cartidges now".
You can no longer scan, fax, or do anything with this device until you go buy ink (can someone at epson please explain that one to me? Why can't I scan? That doesn't use any ink!!!).
Then just to make it even more irritating, if you are low in black ink (like I am) you can't even print in other colors. My status monitor just sits there on my computer telling me that my ink cartridges are low (duh, I know that by now epson thank you very much).
...and as the frustration level gets really high, do you think I can close that window so I can move on to other things? Uh...NO. That little irritating status monitor can not be closed, only minimized! So it's going to sit here on my computer until I go buy a black ink cartridge.
ARGH!!!!
I guess I didn't buy a wireless color inkete all in one printer...I bought an irritating little sister who constantly tells me "buy ink...buy ink...buy ink..."
I was happy until the ink ran low. February 22, 2010 fourbluesixpink (Minnesota) 65 out of 67 found this review helpful
This printer seemed great, until the ink ran low, which didn't take very long. At first, I just changed the black ink cartridge with a long-lasting ink refill (genuine Epson). That worked for about a week. Then, when I was needing to get out the door quickly, it suddenly decided it was low on ink AGAIN. When I looked at the levels of the colors (obviously the black was fine), they were not even half gone! My son fooled around with it for a while, and then I was able to use it again as normal for another three weeks. But once again, tonight, it froze up again - not even allowing me to scan (which takes no ink), because it insisted the ink was low.
I looked at the levels, only the cyan was below half. I replaced that, but it wasn't happy until I replaced every stupid color, although there was plenty left in the others. And the ink pack refill was $50, so I was incredibly unhappy about having to replace all those inks in only two months of not much use.
I definitely would not have bought this printer if I had realized that I would become hostage to its ink situation.
Great hardware, Horrible Software January 24, 2010 Spot On 23 out of 26 found this review helpful
Product prints and scans as advertised. Things look great. However, the software is cobbled together, non-intuitive, and outdated. The printing software can find the unit, but you have to give the scanning software the IP address too, seperately. I upgraded from an old Brother model which had software that just worked and was all integrated; I didn't realize how good I had it.
For years, customer's have been complaining about their "Status Monitor 3" software that's used with most of their printers. It just won't hold a connection to the printer, so you can't see your ink levels or printing progress. Here's a link for more details.

Cost of Ink, cost of my time... try Canon or ... Kodak February 25, 2010 JJ 20 out of 23 found this review helpful
My second Epson. Shame on me.
My complaint is NOT with print quality. Most epson's excel at that. However, when you get "Low" ink level, YOU MUST REPLACE the INK CARTRIDGE. With Epson, you are always replacing the INK before it is empty. Why? it is low. Just keep printing? Nope. Won't let you. With Canon you can print until the last drops are streaking the page. Consider the fact that I can usually print 200 or so pages once my low ink message on my canon, so I can't even imagine how much money I am losing with Epson.
I just would not have imagined that EPSON would have STILL HAD this problem so many years after my first epson. Never again.
Now, if you are a super organized person who will always have an extra ink cartridge on hand (and in each of the colors) and you have no qualms about paying twice as much for ink (gee, isn't it expensive enough!), then this printer will work well and give you wonderful prints. I am not in that Demographic. I care about costs and I care about being able to print at 10 PM the night before a lesson... when my print quiality doesn't need to be OUTSTANDING to simply print a page of notes!
Fast printer, terrible ink problem... March 16, 2010 J. Drews (Fountain Valley, CA) This printer is great in a lot of respects. However it has, in my situation, 2 huge downsides. Here are my pros and cons.
PROS
Very fast. The fastest printer I have owned. Major step up for me in the amount of printing it can do.
Wireless. A little frustrating to set up, but once I did it worked great, and never have had a problem.
Look. It simply looks good and is not huge and clunky like some printers.
CONS
Ink. Others have mentioned the same thing, and I am going to agree. It is unbelievably ridiculous that as of right now I am out of Magenta, but the printer will not allow me to print an ALL BLACK text document. There is no way around it. I have to now go buy more Magenta Ink. So basically you need to keep a full pack of ink colors at home at all times. Which just ups the ink price from around $15 for one color to over $50. If I knew this before I purchased this, it would have immediately come off of my list. I honestly feel very cheated.
Double Sided Printing. This claims to be able to print double sided, but it does not work properly in my experience. I have had it work on occasion, but for large documents it does not. I printed a double sided 100 page document, and after it printed the front side, it suddenly canceled print on the other side. To top it off, there is NO WAY to reprint the second page. Really? Printing the odd pages does not work since some of the document has blank pages.
CONCLUSION
My conclusion for potential buyers is simple. DO NOT BUY THIS PRINTER. Move on. Yes it does print very fast, and the wireless is a very good feature, but a lot of printers have these features. The Ink problem is simply terrible, and cannot be excused. I will never buy another Epson printer. This is just ridiculous. I strongly suggest moving on.
