easy to use but a little bit slow. Bulky. July 4, 2003 Liping Wang (Huh? Why do you care? Ok, CA, USA.) 20 out of 22 found this review helpful
Visioneer never states the scanning speed of this scanner. I test it once scanning 4"x6" photo at 300dpi (color). 12 sec to see the preview, and 22 sec to finish scanning and date transfering. But this is a cheap scanner equipped with USB 1.1, what do you expect. For your info., ScanMaker 5900 with USB 2.0 claims in their spec. that its scanning speed is 18 sec for 4"x6" photo (color) at 300dpi, and 30 sec at 600 dpi. If you do not see stated scanning speed in a scanner's spec., it is safe to assume the measurement is not a proud number. Any guy from Visioneer wants to defend their products? For guys interesting in OCR, I tested it once. The bundled software can recog characters at 99% correct rate in a second. But the page format is not up to my expectation. It miss-read O(Oh!) as 0(zero). I just bought it, so I will play more with it and get more feeling about it. I am a little concerned about its MTBF, becuase its cold fluo. lamp is always on when its power is on. And the "rubber" belt to move the scanning head? I may tell you when it breaks.
Don't buy it January 13, 2004 Paul G. Hamer (Wildomar, CA USA) 17 out of 19 found this review helpful
When this scanner works it does a fair job. Prepare to listen to LOTS of noise and lots of scans with nothing but a black strip in the center of the output. More importantly it is now obsolete and out of production. I had to reinstall Windows XP and was never able to get the scanner to work again. The Visioneer technical support is no help either. It tells you to call a toll number and then you also pay 2 dollars a minute on top of the toll charge. The web site has updates, none of which help. Check with Microsoft to see what WIA drivers XP has to use for scanners and you will NOT see Visioneer on the list. Stay away from Visioneer and it's out of production models.
Average scanner. February 12, 2002 26 out of 31 found this review helpful
This scanner seemed a bit bulky when I got it, the CanoScan N1240U Flatbed Scanner only weighs 3 pounds as compared to 9 for this one. It was easy to set up, just installed the software and it was compatible with my Windows XP Professional computer. One of the problems is that everytime you start up the computer, it wants the scanner to be on and the program that opens is annoying if you don't need to use the scanner. There isn't a way to turn this option off so that's a big downfall. Also the program could use some improvements in its interface and ease of use. The scans are great quality but the software could use much improvement and should be plug&play.
Disappointed! June 26, 2003 J. Treadway (Orange County, CA) 6 out of 6 found this review helpful
This is my second Visioneer scanner. I bought this one specifically for its 35mm slide scanning capability. I have followed all of the instructions for software/hardware installation (I used both Windows Me and XP) for USB and still the slide/transpancy feature does not work! Quality of the scanning for color prints lacks sharpness as compared to the Epson/HP scanners that I have used. Will consider Epson or Canon next time.
No free tech support for any time period. March 12, 2003 Wallace F. Werner (Port Neches, Tx United States) 6 out of 7 found this review helpful
I bought this scanner because there was no driver update for my 7600 model parallel port scanner for my new computer with Windows XP . As usual the software now for operating new hardware is not any good. I have tried to use the Scan Negative option. When I click to review the negative, I get a message that it's "sorry but the program has to close". And then the paperport program freezes up. I bought it to enable scanning negatives. I haven't been able to scan a negative yet. Money wasted. If you need to contact someone for support there is no 1-800 number to call. Bad choice of products.
